Convert WebP to PNG without losing transparency

A transparent WebP can become a transparent PNG. Choose PNG as the output and keep the original dimensions. If the source already has a solid white background, changing its format will not remove that background.

Convert a single image or a batch

  1. Open the WebP to PNG converter and choose your .webp files. You can add up to 20 at once.
  2. Keep PNG selected. Leave resizing blank if you need the same pixel dimensions.
  3. Press Convert, then Download PNG for a single image or the ZIP button for a batch.
  4. Open the downloaded PNG in your destination editor. Check the edges on both a light and a dark background.

A white preview does not always mean transparency is gone

Some image viewers display transparent areas against white. To distinguish a white pixel from a transparent one, put the image over a colored layer in an editor. A transparent area shows the layer beneath it; a white pixel stays white.

If your converted image has a white background, check that the downloaded file is a PNG. JPG cannot contain transparency, and FormatSprout deliberately fills transparent areas with white when JPG is selected.

Why the PNG may be much larger

WebP can compress photographs using lossy encoding. PNG encodes the rendered pixels without additional lossy compression, which often costs more space. The larger PNG does not recreate detail that was already removed from the original WebP.

For editing or a PNG-only form, that tradeoff may be necessary. For delivery on a website that already accepts WebP, keeping the original WebP may be more practical. Compare the format options before converting your entire library.

Opening the result in Photoshop or another editor

If your editor cannot open a particular WebP, try the converted PNG. Use the editor’s Open command with the downloaded file. Merely renaming picture.webp to picture.png changes the filename, not the image encoding.

This workflow does not guarantee identical color rendering across editors. Browser canvas conversion can change embedded profile information; keep the original for color-sensitive work.

Limits to check before you start

Each input can be up to 50 MB and 40 megapixels. Animated WebP exports as a single still frame. PNG conversion does not remove backgrounds, restore detail, or preserve embedded EXIF. Your source files stay unchanged.
