A few things to know.

Both formats are efficient. AVIF is not guaranteed to be smaller, and encoding can be slow on phones. HDR and auxiliary HEIC data are not preserved.

Is this a lossless HEIC-to-AVIF transfer?

No. The photo is decoded to a browser canvas and encoded again. Preserve the original HEIC for archival use.

Why does AVIF take longer?

The browser downloads an AVIF encoder and performs the encoding on your device. Large photos require more work; batches are processed one image at a time for AVIF output.

Are my images uploaded?

No. FormatSprout converts images locally in your browser. Your files never reach our servers.
