A few things to know.

Photographic PNGs can be much larger than HEIC. PNG cannot recover detail lost at capture or retain the full HEIC container's auxiliary data.

Useful for

  • Import an iPhone photo into a PNG-only editor
  • Make an editing copy without another lossy encoding step
  • Remove embedded EXIF from a shared copy

Transparent backgrounds

PNG retains alpha where the decoder supplies it. A normal opaque photo stays opaque.

Getting the quality right

Keep the original dimensions for editing. Choose JPG instead when attachment size matters more than lossless encoding.

Is PNG better than HEIC for photos?

Not automatically. HEIC is efficient for capture and storage; PNG is useful for compatible editing copies but is often much larger.

Does PNG keep Live Photos or HDR?

This tool renders a single still image through a browser canvas. It is not a Live Photo or HDR preservation workflow.
